Storytime Smiles: Promoting Healthy Teeth During Children’s Dental Health Month

Little girl brushing teethFebruary is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a perfect time to focus on building healthy habits for our youngest learners. This month, The Partnership for Children of the Foothills is heading into local library storytimes across Polk, McDowell, and Rutherford counties to share an important message with families: healthy smiles start early.

For children from birth to age five, everyday routines play a powerful role in oral health. Simple actions — gently cleaning gums, brushing teeth twice a day, and establishing calming bedtime routines — can help prevent tooth decay and set the foundation for lifelong health.

That’s where Brush, Book, Bed comes in.

This easy-to-remember routine encourages families to:

  • Brush teeth before bedtime
  • Read a book together
  • Go to bed at a consistent time

Not only does this support dental health, but it also strengthens early literacy skills and promotes better sleep — all essential for healthy development.

Children’s Dental Health Month reminds us that prevention starts at home — and it doesn’t have to be complicated. A toothbrush, a book, and a bedtime routine can make a lasting difference.

The storytime dates are here:

  • February 9 – McDowell County Public Library – Marion Branch
  • February 10 – Polk County Public Library – Saluda Branch
  • February 11 – Polk County Public Library – Columbus Branch
  • February 16 – Mooneyham Public Library
